Hello Summer! We’re off to a very warm start of the season!
A great place to cool down and learn much about contemporary ceramics is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Please see the exhibition called SHAPES FROM OUT OF NOWHERE: Ceramics from the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection. It is a wonderful assembly, built over 50 years by Mr. Ellison and is a magnificent display of so many clay artists, taking this humble material and creating marvelous shapes, vessels, and exciting objects. (On view until August 29, 2021).
It’s been a pleasure showing the images of this work to students of all ages. The children I work with loved looking at work that in so many ways resemble their intuitive way of working with clay. (Due to the pandemic I was able to take them on a virtual tour only.)
As Pablo Picasso stated, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” I’ve learned so much from all of my students each time we have worked together.
Hope you’ll see the show and let me know your reaction in the comments section.
Stay cool!
